Emmetsburg Public Input Surveys: Child Care and Housing

Housing and child care both emerged as priority/action areas during the City of Emmetsburg’s community-wide strategic planning process in 2021. The City of Emmetsburg and ISU Extension & Outreach Palo Alto County are now undergoing two planning processes to determine the specific needs and solutions for our community when it comes to both housing and child care. We need input from the public to understand the challenges that residents and workers are experiences and inform our decision process as we create an action plan for the future.

Housing Survey

Looking for feedback from those living/working in the area

Housing was identified as one of the six priority areas of the City of Emmetsburg’s strategic planning effort in 2021. At this time, the City of Emmetsburg needs public input to get a full-picture view and common understanding of the community’s housing stock and needs. The city is participating in a rural housing needs study, and we need your input! A part of this process is conducting a housing surveyto gain insight for upcoming strategic planning sessions that will create a vision and action plan to address housing needs, challenges, and development opportunities. All responses are anonymous, but your feedback will be used to incorporate your ideas and opinions into the planning process. This survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Your participation is important and greatly appreciated.

About the Study
The City of Emmetsburg was selected as a grant recipient for the Rural Housing Readiness Assessment (RHRA) program. The community is now working with ISU Extension and Outreach’s Community and Economic Development team to assess Emmetsburg’s housing needs, make informed decisions, and create a housing action plan. The City aims to come together with local stakeholders to develop an action plan to address single-family development, multi-family development, senior housing, upper-story housing, etc. Funding for the program was awarded through Empower Rural Iowa.

Child Care Survey

Looking for feedback from those living/working in the area that currently have children or plan to in the next 5 years

Child care has been identified as an urgent need in the Emmetsburg area. To better understand the need so that potential solutions can be identified, ISU Extension and Outreach Palo Alto County, with assistance from First Children’s Finance (FCF), is participating in a child care study and we need your help! A part of the study is conducting a survey to gain feedback from those that live or work in the area and currently have children age 12 or younger, or are planning to have or adopt children in the next 5 years. This survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete. Your participation is greatly appreciated and will help inform decisions about child care in Emmetsburg.

About the Study
Child care is a challenge across rural communities in Iowa and across the nation. Determining a solution involves more than just the physical construction of a new facility. Many factors need to be carefully analyzed to first determine the market feasibility for development of a child care center, expansion of an existing one, or support for in-home providers. The Rural Child Care Market Study program aims to support the use of data and analysis to determine specific needs and solutions. Through greater understanding of geographic market, demographics, competition, and other factors, our community will be armed with the information needed to make proactive steps towards addressing child care challenges. Funding for the program was awarded through Empower Rural Iowa.
